Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which type of therapy is for me?

It can be incredibly overwhelming to find a therapist, let alone to determine which type of therapy is for you! Unfortunately, to determine what works for you, sometimes it can mean finding what doesn't work for you. It is important to be able to discuss with your therapist about your goals for therapy, feel safe to have an open dialogue about what's working/not working in session, and for your therapist to take your feedback. I always encourage consult calls to help begin exploring if you and your therapist are a right fit.

What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, buzzers, tapping, or sound) to reprocess trauma. You are not required to share the entire story of the trauma, rather thinking about it briefly to assist in processing.

Can I start processing in my first session?

Short answer: Maybe! Long answer: it depends on where each individual is in their healing. Sometimes people can begin right away, however more typically we want to ensure we have the coping skills, safety, and plan to do EMDR processing. This could look like one session of prep, or for some people it can be years - there is no straightforward answer!

What is IFS?

IFS stands for Internal Family Systems. IFS provides a reframe of complex emotions, where sometimes we feel multiple feelings at once, or feel in conflict within ourselves. IFS provides a framework to allow us to build connections with all the parts of us. Think the movie Inside Out - but more!

Do you take insurance?

I do not direct bill, however Registered Social Workers (RSW) are covered by most insurance providers!

How often should I see you?

I believe you are the expert in your own life and it is unfair for me to be overly prescriptive of how often you should have a session as there are so many factors in play (cost, schedule, etc). I often will ask - was the session overwhelming and we need extra time between sessions to decompress? Did the session go by too fast and we have more to say? The only time I may make suggestions is when we are doing EMDR processing, as we will want to plan for it to be successful.

Do you work with a Dietitian for eating disorders and disordered eating?

While I am an independent business, I am happy to work closely with your care team. I have a dietitian who I often recommend to clients (Katia Hucl from Nova Nutrition), and I am happy to work with another provider if that is most convenient for you.
